How to Repair Your Refrigerator’s Faulty Door Gasket at Home

Lots of refrigeration repairs need a refrigeration mechanic. Luckily, there are some common faults that can be repaired at home until you are able to call the professionals.

One of these easy repairs is the fridge’s door gasket. Doesn’t your door close all the way? It might be the gasket. A faulty gasket can lead to:

  • The fridge not cooling things properly
  • Condensation and frost build up due to warm air getting inside
  • Wasted energy since the warm air will cause the fridge to work harder to keep cool

Avoid these issues by learning how to repair a faulty gasket.

Is the gasket the problem?

You can verify if your gasket is faulty by placing a piece of paper between it and the fridge’s door jamb. If the paper comes out easily when you try to pull it out, there’s an issue with the gasket.

You can determine the type of gasket you need by reading your owner’s manual and finding out the model of the refrigerator. If you can’t find out what model it is, contact the manufacturer directly.

You can purchase a new gasket at dedicated appliance stores. Ask the employees for help to choose the right one.

1. Prepare the gasket

You need to prepare the new gasket by making it be the correct temperature for it to be pliable enough for mounting. Most gaskets have instructions that come with them that detail the methods you can use for preparing them, but if there are none you have two options:

  1. Leave it in the same room as the fridge for 24 hours to allow the gasket to conform to the same humidity and temperature levels as the current on
  2. Soak it in warm water until it becomes pliable enough for the seal to work

2. Remove the old gasket

Removal methods may differ depending on the materials holding your gasket in place. It may have adhesive strips, screws, or clips that fasten it to the door panel.

  • Adhesive strips—pry away the gasket with a putty knife, holding it between it and the door panel to get the gasket off.
  • Screws—remove them with a screwdriver.
  • Clips—open them manually.

Removal should be done one side at a time, to make sure that all the fastening components have been removed and to prevent leaving behind pieces of the gasket.

3. Clean the mounting area

Leftover residue from the old gasket may prevent the new one from attaching correctly. Use a sponge with liquid dishwasher soap and warm water to clean the mounting area. For stubborn patches use a steel wool scrubbing pad.

4. Attach the new gasket

Depending on the gasket manufacturer and your refrigerator, the tools needed to attach the gasket may vary. Refer to the gasket instructions to determine which supplies are needed.

Apply the gasket to the door panel one side at a time. Make sure that each side is straight and properly aligned, and smooth it out to ensure it lies flat against the panel, without any bumps or curling edges. Use the tools indicated by the gasket manual to secure it. If the gasket requires gasket cement or adhesive glue you will need to let it dry before you can begin using your fridge’s door.

Gasket replacement may solve your door issues in a pinch. If the problem still persists, call a refrigeration mechanic such as iKool Refrigeration Pty Ltd and let them have a look at it.

Why Metal Roofing Is Good For The Environment

If you are thinking that it is time to have a new roof installed on your home, you may want to consider getting a metal roof. These are becoming more and more popular, not only because they are less expensive and easier to maintain, but also because it is also better for the environment than other types of roofing materials. Here are some of the ways that metal roofing can help the environment.

Metal Roofing Is Long-Lasting

When you have metal roofing installed, you can be sure that it is going to last for as long as you own your home. In fact, because metal roofing products are so durable, there are often lifetime warranties. You will likely leave your home long before the roof wears out. A traditional roof with asphalt shingles will need to be replaced in about 15 to 20 years. Metal roofing will last well over 50 years. Because it lasts so long, that means there won’t be roofing materials taking up space in landfills.

Metal Roofing Is Recycled—And Recyclable

Traditional roofing materials aren’t recycled, and they are made from new materials. Metal roofing is made with a lot of recycled metals, and if you do decide to replace it, all of the materials can be either reused or recycled to make other products. This is one of the main reasons why this type of roofing is considered to be environmentally friendly.

Metal Roofing Is Energy-Efficient

Having metal roofing is like adding more insulation to your home. You can save a lot of money on your energy bills by having a metal roof installed. If you live in a warmer area, a metal roof can help keep your home cool. The materials and special coatings used will reflect the rays of the sun, so you have a cooler home in the summer and you don’t have to use your air conditioning as much. Whether it is painted or not, the metal will reflect the sun. But, if you choose to have a white coating, you are going to have even more benefits, because it will reflect the sun’s rays even more.

If you live in an area where there are cooler temperatures, you can choose to have your metal roofing painted a darker color. That way, it is going to absorb the sun’s rays, and transfer the heat into your home. This is going to help you cut back on your home heating bills.

How To Run A Safe Community Concert

Running a community concert is a great way to attract new people into your community area and can be a good way to showcase the talent in your local area. However, even if people are not paying for the concert tickets, as concert organiser you are responsible for the safety of the patrons and the performers. Here are some important concert design aspects to consider.

Keeping the crowd safe requires a bollard configuration that limits access to the stage while not allowing the crushing of patrons. Bollards that can be easily dismantled can also let medical staff reach patients in the middle of the crowd quickly and easily.

Crowd Control

Hiring professional crowd control staff can both prevent issues and help manage small flare-ups before they become huge brawls. Ensure that the crowd control staff have distinctive uniforms so that they see each other from a distance and ensure good communication between all members of the team so they can call for backup when required.

Hydration, particularly in summer, is very important as the crowd temperature will be higher than the ambient temperature due to body heat. Hydration issues and heat stroke can be aggravated in patrons who have taken alcohol or other drugs.

Having free or cheap water on hand is a good way to ensure that crowd stays hydrated.

First Aid

For a small fee you can hire charity first aid providers such as St John’s Ambulance to provide onsite first aid support. This is particularly relevant if you are expecting large crowds or if your concert site is challenging for an ambulance to access.

Water and electricity are not friends

It’s important to do everything you can to prevent water getting into the sound equipment both for the health of your equipment and for the safety of your performers. You can place waterproof covers over the vulnerable areas as well as label the area to indicate it can not have any water contact. If your concert is in a park, you can also request the position and timing of sprinklers to keep the equipment and crowd from getting soaked.

Emergency muster points

You need to have clearly marked muster points so that you easily vacate the site in the event of a threat or dangerous activity. Get the performers or MC to mention the points to the patrons before the event starts. It might also be good to have the MC mention the points between sets, too.

3 Handy Tips from Commercial Painters

When it comes to painting your house, most homeowners will agree that it is cheaper to do it yourself rather than hire a professional. However, if you do not know how to go about this you will end up with an unprofessional paint job that you will probably grow to resent. So how can you save some money while still have a perfect paint job? Here are some handy tips from commercial painters that will enable you to do just that.

Which paint type should you choose?

There are two main types of paint: water based paint and oil based paint. Oil based paint has always been popular for indoor paint jobs as the finished product has a glossy sheen.

However, it is not necessary to use oil based paints, as there are numerous water based paint options that have been developed in recent years to achieve the same effect. In fact, most modern water based paints not only offer you the shine of oil based paints, but also they have less odor and can be wiped clean when dry. If you are considering a paint finish, you could choose from matte, satin or an eggshell finish depending on your taste.

Is primer necessary?

Contrary to popular belief, primer is not mandatory when embarking on a paint job. Commercial painters advise to use primer on three occasions:

  • if you are planning to repaint your home with a lighter color than that currently on your walls.
  • if your walls are badly stained and you would like to efficiently cover them up.
  • if your walls were marked up using spackle.

Generally, primer is used to ensure you have a consistent, neutrally colored surface to paint on. Thus, if your walls are already consistent then you do not have to worry about the paint adhering onto them correctly.

Which paint roller should you use?

A common mistake that people make is assuming all paint rollers work the same. However, there are two main types of rollers and they work to achieve different results.

The first is the woven paint roller. This is made from woven materials and rarely sheds due to the continuous yarn it is made out of. Woven rollers are best for painting smooth surfaces. The second type is the knitted roller. They tend to be high density and will hold a lot of paint. They are best used for textured surfaces.

These tips can help you on your way to a better paint job. If you would rather have a professional take care of the project, start contacting local services such as John Hersee Master Painter Pty Ltd.

3 Surprising Times to Consider a Portable Toilet Hire

Portable toilets are not as rustic as many people assume; the inside of a portable toilet may include running hot and cold water, an actual flush toilet, and a comfortable seat that could rival the one you have inside your house. These can typically be set up anywhere and are serviced every day if necessary. If you’ve never thought about a portable toilet hire for your home, consider three situations when they may be a good choice for you.

1. You’re hosting a large party.

If you’re hosting the annual family reunion or a graduation party in your own backyard, consider a portable toilet hire. Your own bathrooms inside may see a tremendous amount of foot traffic during this time and there may be long lines that start to form. Your guests may be more comfortable if there are additional toilets for their use, so have a portable toilet or two set up for any party you’re hosting.

2. You’re having your home renovated or repaired.

Typically professional contractors will have their own portable toilets brought in for their use, but if you’re having friends or someone you know help you work on your home, you may want to think about your own portable toilet hire. This is especially true if the work will affect the plumbing and you may need to turn off the water for any length of time.

It’s easy to think that everyone in the home can simply go without using the restroom for several hours or run up to a local fast food restaurant, but for everyone’s comfort and convenience, consider a portable toilet hire instead.

3. You’re moving.

If you’re moving into a new home you might consider having a portable toilet set up in both locations. Both homes will have a lot of foot traffic between you, your friends and family who are helping, and any movers you might be hiring. This too can overwhelm the bathrooms in your home and you may also want to pack away the towels, soap, and toilet tissue in both locations. Having a portable toilet can ensure everyone’s comfort and you won’t need to worry about trying to pack up items while people are using the bathroom.

Keep these occasions in mind and consider a portable toilet hire for any of them. This can protect your home and make your guests feel more comfortable during any of these times. For more information on portable toilet hire, talk to companies like Eagle Hire for help.
